As a secondary school English Co-ordinator, I come across a lot of students with reading difficulties; students who have a reading age well below that of their peers. These students often lack confidence and simply tune out of the lesson. Many times, these are the disruptive students, choosing to be in trouble over admitting they can’t understand what they are reading.
Whilst tutoring for Readwell NSW several years ago, I worked with many students, Primary and Secondary, who were symptomatic of some of the behaviours I have briefly outlined. Working in groups of up to four students, these children would begin the course very quiet and somewhat subdued. Within weeks, their reading levels dramatically improved. I believe this to be a direct result of using the Readwell programme. Over time, these students began to engage with each other and genuinely seemed to enjoy reading. They would bring the books they had borrowed from the library and talk about what they liked about them. They were more confident and certainly open to reading on their own or in front of others. I personally witnessed students move from reading ages 5 and 6 years below their chronological age, to reading at levels above their age. Again, I believe this to be a direct result of the Readwell programme.
As a teacher and a parent, I have no hesitation endorsing this programme. It works on an academic level as well as addressing the more subtle issues that learning difficulties can have on students. If my child was to have difficulty reading, I would have no hesitation in signing him up for this programme as I know from first hand experience that it would dramatically improve his reading.
